Brominated Flame Retardants (PBDE and PBB) in Sludge – a Problem?

چکیده

Preface In the autumn of 1999, the presence of brominated flame retardants in sewage sludge aroused medial attention in Sweden. As a result of this, LRF (The farmers organisation) recommended their members to renounce receiving and using sludge as a fertilizer. According to preliminary risk evaluations made at the same time, no obvious risk could be detected. VAV took the initiative to do a further risk analysis. These findings are documented in this report. Karin Book from VAV assisted in the literature survey. National Substances Inspectory, Sweden, has kindly contributed by giving access to a preliminary EU-report on risk evaluations of deca-, octa and pentaBDE.

Association of Brominated Flame Retardants With Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome in the U.S. Population, 2003–2004

OBJECTIVE Chlorinated persistent organic pollutants (POPs), endocrine disruptors accumulated in adipose tissue, were associated with diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Brominated flame retardants (BFRs), such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) or polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), are another class of POPs for which body burden is increasing. Cross-sectional associations of serum concentrati...

Temporal trends and spatial distributions of brominated flame retardants in archived fishes from the Great Lakes.

To explore the geographical distribution and temporal trends of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the Great Lakes, lake trout from Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Ontario and walleye from Lake Erie, collected during the period of 1980-2000, were analyzed. The concentrations of fifteen PBDE congeners and one polybrominated biphenyl (PBB-153) were determined in each fish sample. Lake...

Brominated flame retardants: a novel class of developmental neurotoxicants in our environment?

Brominated flame retardants are a novel group of global environmental contaminants. Within this group the polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) constitute one class of many that are found in electrical appliances, building materials, and textiles. PBDEs are persistent compounds that appear to have an environmental dispersion similar to that of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dichlorodiphen...

Breast cancer among women in Michigan following exposure to brominated flame retardants.

In this updated follow-up, we investigated the breast cancer experience among women in Michigan exposed to brominated flame retardants, some 30 years following exposure. Michigan residents were enrolled in a study cohort after exposure to polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) through the consumption of contaminated food products. PBB concentrations were measured in serum at the time of enrolment. Can...

Reductive debromination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in anaerobic sediment and a biomimetic system.

Because of the bioaccumulation of penta- and tetrapolybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants in biota, the environmental biotransformation of decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) is of interest. BDE-209 accounts for more than 80% by mass of PBDE production and is the dominant PBDE in sediments. Most sediments are anaerobic and reports of microbial reductive dehalogenation of hydrophobic ...
